My brother’s ‘98 4Runner just hit 250,000 on the original motor and transmission! We drove it across the country (still have to write about that) after he bought it from our dad four years ago. Many fond memories of that truck - I learned how to drive a stick in it, wooed a few ladies, pulled down a cemented basketball hoop, even folded down the back seats and threw a massive mower in the back once because it seemed like it would fit. It did, barely.
Honestly though, my favorite memory is from when my dad first bought the thing in 2000. He worked a ton back then - still does, actually - so we didn’t get to spend as much time with him as kids as any of us would have liked. But anyway, my parents have a long sweeping uphill driveway, and whenever we were out playing in the yard and he happened to come home at a “normal” time, he’d slow down and we’d run up and hop on the running boards and ride up the hill holding onto the window frame or the oh-shit handle once we got a bit bigger.
Sadly, I became a teenager shortly after he bought it and thought it was no longer cool to play in the yard or hang onto a moving vehicle. Now those are some of my favorite childhood memories - funny how that works.
